Remember that recap I owe you! Part 2 of my trip home:

Once Christmas hit, it seemed like my whole vacation home was over in the blink of an eye (even though I had 6 days left!) So, let’s see here, I’ll try to remember everything I did:

Saturday- I headed to MPLS for a little house gathering at one of my college friend’s house, and was able to see a few of the roomies (guaranteed good time). We sipped a few cocktails and headed to Uptown. Again, good times guaranteed. Stella’s was where it was at, and if only my camera wasn’t so bulky, I could have shown you a more exciting post, more like a more exciting 2 weeks home. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a single shot. So lame! Instead, I googled pics for you, because that’s more exciting than just words.

Monday- I had dinner at Noodles with two of my favorites, Ben and Tom, friends of mine from High School. I went for the Japanese dish, must have been missing it!

Source: The Healthy Everythingtarian (funny how when I googled “Japanese Pan Noodles,” her blog came up, one I am an avid reader of, so naturally, I opted for her picture.)

After dinner, I zipped on over to Arden Hills to visit SPENSER from my old job this past summer. Love her new house & puppy :)

Tuesday- I did some last-minute shopping with my friend Jake at the MOA, spent the evening with Sara at Cosco, and then made a mad dash to my other friend Sarah’s for her birthday party (her super-sweet parents prepared snacks and dinner for us!)

Source: MinnesotaGal (There’s another girl out there from MN, studying/traveling in Asia. Crazy!)

Wednesday- My LAST DAY!, had lunch with Mommy at Applebees, did some shopping and gift buying, met up with the fabulous Zach and Britt for a quick cup of joe at Sbux before jetting off to have drinks and apps with aunty Maureen and friend Elaine. I was up until 3:30am packing, bleh, and then woke up late (obv) at 5a.m., got in a quick 2-miler on the treadmill, and jetted off to the MSP airport, bidding farewell, for only 6.5 more months! Wow, what a fast vaca that was! But soooo good to be back in the U.S.!

With all this excitement back on my blog, are you having a hard time keepin’ up? Miss anything? Since returning to Japan, here’s what I’ve had to say, right at your fingertips, mere clicks away:

Japan–>U.S.–>BACK TO JAPAN.

and lastly,

The Ones I Miss the Most

There ya have it, all of my thoughts in the past week. Enjoy!

Happy Tuesday all! (Even though I’m not actually posting this until my Wednesday- you U.S. readers out there are still on Tuesday!…and I have yet to recap my day anyway).

At the office, without teaching, until the 15th, I must find within me, a lil’ self-motivation for any and everything. Whether it be studying Japanese (ha), cleaning off my desk, going through old files, takin’ a few laps as to prevent a whole day of not moving, update the resume, job search, grad school searching- you name it, I could should be doing it. However, I frequently find myself putzing around with other things. Typical.

One of the biggest changes I’ve had to make since graduating college, and especially since moving here to Japan is the increase in my self-motivation, especially when it comes to exercise and even more now that it’s winter. Ugh. I was thinking about how I love to run, run for miles and miles, hour after hour, BUT there is nothin’ worse than waking up at 5:30a.m. and going for a lil’ jog when you have to do it alone. I miss my mom walks, I miss my daily workouts with various friends back home. So this post here is a shout out to those friends who keep me in line, keep me motivated, and keep me interested in the sport. I love to run, but it’s not nearly as fun or enjoyable when you have to do it alone. So, Napes, Jamie, Megan, Connie, Britt, Havers, K. Trom, and anyone else who I’ve dragged out, or who has pulled me out to pound the pavement. I am thanking you right here. Right now. Let me tell ya- it’s just not the same here in Japan. I have to wake up every morning and motivate myself- there is not a SINGLE runner here in the Owani-Hirosaki-surrounding town area that I can easily persuade to get movin’ with me. Sad, sad day- so just know, my runner friends, you are missed. Terribly.

That leads me to touch on my last two days in Owani. I’ve neglected the gym. Well, there was a close attempt on Monday, but because the Japanese like to celebrate the New Year for 4 days…good ol’ Holiday Sports was closed. I was devasted. I even trekked all the way to Hirosaki to find this out. So, I was a little less willing come Tuesday. I blame the jet-lag. Still a viable excuse? Probably not, but I say it is. I got in my 8-minute abs and called it a day, with the company of a bowl of popcorn the The Office to lull me to sleep. Perfection (but surely not self-motivation).

As for the rest of my day at the office:

More like a tour of Owani Ski Resort…Mr. Watanabe (pictured) and Mr. Shimoyama took me around town to fix the Cash Card at Michinoku bank, pay my accumulating water bill (dang, 2-months worth), and my even more neglected gas bill (eek, 3 months!), and we made the wise choice to sign up for automatic withdrawal (finally)!

But that was not nearly as exciting as the visit to the mountain!

And that my friends, is how you spend your Tuesday afternoon in out of the office. :)

~Molly

It won’t stop snowing. Not for one minute. I’ve shoveled 4 times. I’ve fallen twice. And I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve slipped and caught myself from falling. Will it work to spread table salt on my sidewalk? Or my entire route to work? I might try it.

Moving on, as I promised, the surprise video of me back in the states. And if all goes as planned and this works to post, I will be super excited and then post more and more videos! Tours of my house, my town, EVERYTHING! Ok, here it is. And a special thanks to MPC for videotaping…and picking me up from the airport :)

Ok, let’s hope it works! And later today I’ll finish the recap Part 2 of my trip back to the United States. I’m off to English Club to watch October Sky- all-time favorite movie! You can find the link to my recap 2 here also.

My alarm was set and ready to wake me at 5:30 a.m. Just in time for a quick morning walk and full shower, with time to spare. However, the internal clock was a little ahead of schedule (or still on MN time). I was wide-awake at 4:30 a.m. but not quite ready to move- since I could still see my breath. I went to sleep the night before, with my sidewalk fully shoveled and the streets were freshly plowed. I was unpleasantly surprised by another 4 inches that had accumulated overnight. Wasn’t 3 feet of snow enough? There goes my plan for a morning walk. Instead, I shoveled the path again, and headed back in for 8-minute abs on YouTube and took a nice, long hot shower. I thrown offguard when not only were the bottoms of my shampoo bottles filled with a little block of ice, but the inside contents were also FROZEN. Wowie- didn’t think it got that cold overnight. After running the product under some hot water- we were golden. You’ll be happy to know, I decided not to risk my life and bike to work, despite my disliking for walking when I’m in a time crunch. Instead, I made sure to leave myself plenty of time for my morning commute via foot no-traction boots. I only almost biffed it less than 5 times. My boots definitely suffice for the warmth factor, but practicality (like waterproofness and traction—they’re lacking). The students are out until January 14th, so no teaching. Now would be the perfect time to recap my surprise trip home to the U.S.A.:

WEEK 1:

Well to start off my adventure, I barely made it out of the Chicago airport. I traveled through customs and was in need of a little freshening up. Let’s just say I may have dilly-dallied a wee bit too long in the ladies room. I washed my face, brushed the teeth, reapplied makeup and got changed. When I finally came out, I found the nearest person with a phone to call my dear friend Michael Phillip (the one picking me up in MPLS) to tell him everything was on-time. The lady next to me then said, “Aren’t you going to MPLS?” Why yes, I am- She proceeded with, “Well they just shut the doors to the flight.” WHAT!?!??! I was sitting here the WHOLE time and I didn’t hear one call! (ok I was in the bathroom for a good 45 minutes, but still- I didn’t even hear the intercom make any calls!

My heart STOPPED. I ran up to a male worker, obviously in a panic- tears refrained for now, but I said: I HAVE TO GET ON THAT FLIGHT. He didn’t think it was possible, but opened the door to call attention to the worker down the ramp (who was literally closing the door to the plane). I was crying by this point, saying I was surprising my family, I had to get home, all while this lady is reaming me out, yelling (loud) “WHERE IS YOUR BOARDING PASS, YOU’RE NOT GETTING ON THIS FLIGHT, IT’S TOO LATE.” I may or may not have been in hysterics by this point (it’s all a little fuzzy), but my neatly organized documents were now strewn everywhere in search of my boarding pass (which was on top, which I would have found right away had she not been YELLING at me, which would have made for a slightly less frantic and disheveled experience).  Thankfully, for the male worker, down on his hands and knees, picking up my life, piece by piece. Needless to say- I made it on the plane, probably hyperventilating at this point (so much for that make-up eh!) I sat myself quietly next to a saint from L.A., while all other eyes still on me (how awkward) and then the stewardess handed me a glass of water. That last hour was a complete blur and flew by, as I talked off the ear of the man next to me.

Next up- meeting up with MPC who picked me up, present box wrapped with a bow, in tow, and we were on our way.

Hopefully this works, but here is the video link to THE SURPRISE! My parents had NO CLUE!!! IT. WAS. FABULOUS. (Best part, as MPC was videotaping, dad comes outside and has no clue who this guy on our porch is, being that they’ve never met this friend, ha).

My first week home was slow (in a good way). I relaxed, caught up with my family, went out to dinner for every meal practically (so much for all that hard work at the gym!), surprised G-ma, went to Perkins with Aunty Maureen, Grandma, and sissy, briefly saw my bestie Megan K and fam for her birthday dinner, went out on the town with the roomies, hung out on Grand Ave for lunch and coffee with Aunty and sissy, and traveled up to my 2nd home, St. Joseph, MN to meet up with my FAVORITE KELLY MARCUM for a lunch that flew by way.too.fast. We just chatted the whole afternoon away! Her sweet, sweet mom gave me the BEST TEA EVER!!…It’s Gingerbread tea. MMM, so good. Then, before I knew it, Christmas Eve was here, we were snowed in, watched a family flick and hit the hay. Santa came bright and early and we had our infamous Christmas brunch with Monkey Bread, egg dish, bacon, fruit, and cookies to boot! I was in a week-long food coma already, and this put me over the edge! My Molly Moves page is collecting dust as we speak (should probably update that- considering I DID move over break!). Stay tuned for Recap 2 (Week 2 of vaca) in tomorrow’s post.

Now time to tune into Harry Potter with the English Club…oh wait, it’s in Japanese, without English subtitles. I think I can fairly say- this is Japanese club- cuz I don’t gotta clue of what’s goin’ on.

After hours, headed/slid home in yet another snow-filled afternoon. Maybe another 3 inches?! My goodness.

For dinner, I channeled my inner vegetarian and whipped up a little Quinua. This WILL be a regular guest to future meals. So delish…waaaaay better than any rice or couscous you could ever make.

With a lil of this:

And that:

and a few added black beans on top, I came up with a masterpiece (thanks to the Quinua recipe on the bag :) A few modifications, as always):

Off to the gym. First day back, but it’s how I’m stayin’ on track in 2010. Nighty night.

~Molly

P.S. The surprise video is coming as soon as I can figure out my YouTube account and password. :)

Helloooooooooo!

It was my first real day back in Japan, now that I was actually in my own town, the place I hold close to my heart, and have been calling ‘home’ for the past 5 months- yes, that’s right folks- I’m back in Owani machi.

…and have yet to unzip the suitcase. Ok, it’s unzipped, but definitely not put away. I loathe unpacking. Then there was this to tackle:

Yes, those are 3-ft snow drifts (I swear they’re more intimidating in real life, oh and when you slip and fall into them).

So I’ve spent the past few days taking in the culture and getting back into the swing of things here in Japan. It’s now Monday, so let’s rewind back to Friday (when we landed in Tokyo) and recap from there. ***The next post will be a little vaca recap for you all, so you can hear about and SEE my surprise back to Minnesota!

But first, I met up with Adam and Melissa in the Tokyo Narita airport, just after customs. I for sure thought I would feel lost and confused (more than my usual discomfort), but I was pleasantly surprised to feel like I fit right back into the Japanese culture. Once we gathered our belongings, we headed for the airport shuttle, our destination- Haneda Domestic airport, an hour away.

We were finally boarding our last flight for a long time (at least until the next adventure), but the last 20 hours were beginning to wear on me. The weather in Tokyo was gorgeous, I’m guessing in the 50’s!? And it was sunny…little did I know the surprise we’d encounter coming back to Aomori…dun dun dun….

Despite poppin’ a few Benadryl for the 13-hour flight and feeling quite rested, by the last flight, I was EXHAUSTED. After the stewardess poured my green tea, I took a swig and fell asleep with it in my hand! I woke to a very uncomfortable burning sensation all down my arm and side of my shirt. Oh darn. Once that mess was cleaned, it was dang near time to land. I will come out and say right now- I hate landings- especially that day. There was a huge storm in Aomori and our first attempt to land was a bust. I was gripping my armrest so hard, I think my shoulders cramped. Palms sweating, Molly praying and the rickety plane bouncing almost all the way to the runway- just barely touching the ground, before the pilot made the announcement that he would need to take off and attempt the landing again, as if that terrifying experience wasn’t enough, we had to go through it again. I am not a big fan of turbulence, at all!

If the second attempt failed, we were destined back to Tokyo, how annoying would that be!? Lucky for us, we were able to touch the ground, wheels first (not the wings) like it actually felt like! It may have been a little more comforting landing in daylight, that way I would have at least been able to see what was going on outside the window. The three of us made it out to the taxi, dragging our luggage thru heaps of snow. What a sight. There was SO.MUCH.SNOW. The driver took one look at us and for sure must have thought, “There is no way you can fit all that baggage in my taxi.” I had one big suitcase, a carry-on and my backpack. Adam and Melissa each checked two bags, and had 2 carry-on’s each as well. We jammed and crammed everything (including Adam’s skis!) into the taxi bound for Aomori City. Almost home.

Now I just wanted to be home. It was approaching 9 p.m. and the last train was 9:36. Cuttin’ close. We brought my bags to the car and I seriously wish I had a picture to show you the piles of snow that car was buried under. In my tennis shoes, shovel in hand, Adam and I attempted to dig out the car. Since the wind blew from only one direction, one half of the car was under at least a foot of snow, if not more. The tires, buried. Hood and windshield, buried. It was a mess. And a cold one too.  With minutes to spare we made it to the station, the train was thankfully running late and once it finally came, I realized I was standing on the wrong platform! Adam and I made a MAD DASH up the stair and through the tunnel to the next platform. I really wanted to get home! I hopped on, but sadly the trains were only running to Hirosaki for the rest of the night. I met up with Rach (so good to be reunited!!! Haha) and I met her boyfriend Ricky, who’s visiting from Jersey for the week. I found my spot right on the air mattress and finally fell sound asleep by 3 a.m. (Minnesota time- noon).

Owani was calling my name and all I wanted to do was unpack and get my life back on track. Unfortunately for me- the roads were NOT plowed and I dragged my suitcases through at least 3inches of fluffy slush…still in my dang tennis shoes. It was snowing heavily and the attempted call to my supe to help a sistah out failed….so I kept on dragging. I only slipped and fell once. Impressive I might add. Shimoyama finally called back, picked me up (less than a block from my house), but was then able to help me turn everything back on in my house. Oh, and he shoveled part of my sidewalk which was buried under 3 FEET of snow.

I passed out at 5 p.m. suitcases untouched and my bed sheets barely pulled back.

Sunday funday. I skyped with Ma and sissy, thanking them for the Christmas package I found waiting for me at my door- a beautiful necklace, earrings, and F.R.I.E.N.D.S. season 2 enclosed. JACKPOT! :D

I made it out for a 4/5 mile run, hit up the Jillian 30 day shred Level 1, and did my groc. shopping. I couldn’t believe how much I got for only Y3600!

I do miss home a bit, but not quite like my first time around. Living here in Japan has become routine for me now and it feels good to be back in the swing of things.

Thanks for tuning in to this here blog. I’ll never leave you hangin’ for 2 weeks straight- AGAIN!

~Molly

Happy New Year!!! Welcome to 2010, back to life in Japan, and even more importantly, back to this blog! I am so excited to kick off the new year with a bang! I’ve got my Jillian Michaels in tow, along with an abundance of raw almonds, quinua, and hopes for a motivated & healthy new decade!

~Molly

So all, I’ve been M.I.A. for ages now and it’s been KILLING ME! Mom wouldn’t let me blog in fear of ruining the surprise for the family on Christmas of my homecoming. It’s Christmas Eve. We’re snowed in. No seeing the family.

But, Mother Nature will have her way. Now, rewinding back to last Thursday:

Thursday at 3:47a.m. my day officially commenced. Little does my family know, I am leaving Aomori ken for 14 days and heading to my homeland- the U.S.A.! I can’t wait. That’s an understatement. I am ecstatic to see my family and spend Christmas at home surrounded by those I love.

Wednesday evening I made sure everything was in order, bags packed, souvenirs tucked away safely, and lastly, the most terrifying thing- carrying my savings with me. Cold.Hard.Cash. I would be handing the moolah directly over to Ma and Pa McGuire as soon as I got home. Bummer. This is the most money I’ve ever had in.my.life. And the fact that I’m carrying it is downright scary. Good thing I have one of those handy-dandy body strap/carriers. Under all these layers, I’m a part of my own little covert operation. Mission- Get the money to America without being mugged and into the bank! I took a picture of the wad, I’ll have to show you all the brief 48 hours I was a ‘millionaire’ before handin’ the dough over to pay off those darn college loans.

Taxis, snow storms, illegal liquids (yea me), layovers, coffee, soup in a cup, more layovers, and finally hoooooooooooooooooooome. Like I said, due to extreme levels of excitement, I wasn’t able to sleep a wink, barely. We all got showered and primped for our travels at about 4:30a.m. The taxi came exactly at 6:10a.m. to bring us to airport #1. We would first fly from Aomori Airport via domestic airlines and arrive in Tokyo one hour later at the Haneda Airport. Then, proceed to transfer to Narita Int’l airport, $30 and 1 hour later. I was out like a rock on both the flight and bus transfer. Makin’ up for lost hours the night before.

Once reaching Narita, we proceeded to customs and leave it to me  to get searched…not random, but because a huge red flag went up when I was caught trying to smuggle my jars of Apple Jam. Crap. Ha, this was unintentional, obviously. I forgot I purchased them in the Aomori airport and put them in my carryon. Oops. But let me tell you the difference between America and Japan. 1. The lady kindly asked me if I had liquids. I said “I don’t think so,” but then when we went through my bag and I remembered the dang jam….Oh, gomenasai! 2. I was completely blown away when she politely told me not to worry and that I could go back to the baggage check-in, with my jam and have them add it to my bag. 3. WHAT?! You’re not confiscating my jam?! How happy is this girl right here?! She was so friendly and so accommodating and helpful. Here I made the mistake of carrying liquids past the security check and she was allowing me to add it to my checked bag. Let me tell you…this would NOT happen in the U.S. Seriously, some grouchy customs worker would probably chew your head off for being so careless and then proceed to take your jam and bring it home to their family for personal enjoyment. Yea, boo U.S., yay Japan. Haha, ok that’s enough America bashing, but seriously this country never ceases to amaze me…even though that was such an insignificant event, it’s the little things that can make or break your day. And that made mine.

My flight wasn’t until 7p.m. I made a few laps around the airports completing the most depressing window shopping excursion- yea Gucci, Burberry, Tiffany & Co, out of this girls budget :(

I look back at my life a year ago, and no way would I have thought to find myself roaming an airport, in Japan, by myself- and feel completely safe and content. To me now, it’s almost second nature. Ahhh, I feel like such a grown up :)

Time to take a few laps before this 11-hour flight forces me to sit and get blood clots in my butt. Ugh.

2 Week Hiatus!

Hi all!

Well, I’m on my way OUT the door, and going on a last-minutes decided vacation. I’ll try to blog as much as possible, but will for sure be back by Christmas to fill you in. Don’t go far, I’ll be back!

Happy Holidays and thanks for following my adventures!

Judgement Day

Since the road conditions were NOT improving, I decided to pack all of my work clothes, lunch, shower stuff, etc. Tuesday night and bring it to Hirosaki with me for my night at the gym. Again, crashed at my 2nd home, and rode the train back in the a.m. I had to walk from the station directly to school, because there was no way I could bike with how slick the roads were. I am foolish at times, but I’m not stupid.

I nervously sat around all morning, fearing the fate of my evaluation. I know that probably seems foolish, since I get along with all of the employees and staff, but I am just too critical of myself and feel like I’m not as good of a teacher as my predecessor, because he was fluent in Japanese, obviously a huge perk in the staffroom.

Well, Mr. Shimoyama and Watanabe made an appearance at 2a.m. Right on schedule. I was sitting at my desk, sweaty palms and unable to stomach my lunch (until after the meeting, due to nerves!) I waited for Mr. V.P. to summon me to the Judgement room (aka the principal’s office), but all of a sudden, he walked by and they all left the staff room…without me. Hmmm, the meeting was held without me being there, which seems odd, but kind of a relief. Apparently there was a miscommunication with my contract and my school, and it wasn’t exactly being followed (i.e. not being able to leave at lunch, and working too many hours…)

So, it looks like I am doing everything right, so far, so good…minus my frequent eating habits. That’s just too bad.

Mr. Kimura came over to my house after school to drop off my skis and it was late, cold, and unpleasant outside. Sooooooooo NO GYM! Yup, I made the call. I’m a slacker. BUT on a totally different note, I DID go to this awesome, awesome thrift store on Tuesday (NOT AT ALL MY TYPE), but in Japan, it’s like you’re making a brand new purchase. Not one item is torn, worn, or frayed. I was in heaven. Everything was super cheap and in mint condition. I owe you many pics from this week, but I will have a full unveiling of my purchases, which included:

  • CUTE boots ($20)
  • Skinny Jeans ($5)
  • 2 scarves ($5 each)
  • 1 scarf ($3)
  • 2 sweaters ($5 each)

WHAT A STEAL!

Ok, it’s time for a low-key, computer-free evening, ok yea right. But low-key for sure. Maybe a lil’ Gossip Girl!?

Until next time,

Molly

Crash and Burn

***PICTURES A.S.A.P.***

It’s officially a WINTER WONDERLAND here in Owani! So beautiful…if you’re wearing long underwear, boots, 2 parkas, earband + hat, and thermal gloves…then, and ONLY THEN is this winter beautiful.

And what would a post be without starting it off with a lil’ bike adventure?! I attempted riding back from the station at the crack of dawn (ok 7:15a.m.) to my house to grab a few things before heading off to work. Who knew a bike could fish tail first of all?! Well my friends, it.is.possible.

I ran out the door, contemplated walking through the 3 inches of snow, but no time my friends, no time. I hopped right back on the death-mobile and tried to avoid all ice patches. It was too good to be true. It was smooth-sailing for mere minutes. I decided (foolishly) that I needed to take a picture of the gorgeous snow-covered evergreens. Seriously, beautiful. After riding past a man shoveling off his front step I made the quick and rash decision to stop dead in my tracks. Do you know what happens when you slam on your breaks, on a bike, in the snow? Let me paint a picture for ya: Molly goes flying off the bike, purse that was once in the basket is now strewn all over the middle of the street–in the snow, camera in the snow (luckily still in the case), and the said man running at me, shovel in hand, yelling “Daijou bou, daijou bou?!?!?” Shake it off, just shake it off. Haha. All I could do was laugh, and breathe a sigh of relief to discover every electronic in my possession was still in functioning form. Thank goodness. Funny thing, it was a dumb choice to ride my bike to work this morning, even more dumb, I will continue to ride my bike in the snow until it’s up to my knees. Walking takes too long. So now I’ve learned you just can’t brake on short notice…or sometimes at all.

~~~
The good ol’ MIA supe decided to make an appearance at O.J.H.S. finally. Sometimes the whole culture differences/language barrier drives me nuts. I had a laundry list of “issues” to discuss with him, b/c in my opinion, as my supervisor, you should be there to help the ALT (me) or whomever. I understand and completely sympathize with him that he is really busy. I’m not asking a whole lot, but I think it’s polite to at least answer an email with: “I’m busy now, but I can help you later/tomorrow/next week.” I just don’t understand how it can be so difficult to at least reply. Then, things made a little more sense- one of the English teachers told me that in Japanese culture, if the person is busy, they just ignore messages. DUMB. There, I said it. That is ridiculous. What if I was dying. Or stuck in a snowbank or something. I just think the communication could improve a bit.
Oh well, Wednesday is my evaluation. YIKES. I hope that despite the language barrier, I am an asset to the school :-/
Well, again, no more time for this here blog, but time for the gym, dinner, and cleaning.
Ikimasu yo! (Let’s Go)
~Molly
